Before Haley rolled out of bed the next morning, she reached for a sheet of paper and scribbled something about Nana’s grocery list. She didn’t even think about the pen or the ink; there was a fountain pen on her nightstand that had some unnamable cocktail of colors in it because she never bothered to fully empty the reservoir before refilling it. She thought it had originally been Vibrant Pink but then she’d put Red Dragon in it, and then possibly Fox Squirrel or Hematite or that one raspberry color that had a picture of a girl on it. She slept-wrote the thing, then slept-walked to the board and stuck it on with a push-pin, which required a lot of leaning to get it to penetrate. Then she went back to bed.

The second time she woke up, it was to the smell of toast… which would have been improved by the smell of bacon, but she wouldn’t turn down toast. Especially with that cinnamon smell added to the mélange. French toast, then. When would they run out of eggs? Had the chickens mutated? She hoped not.

“Do you think we could find chickens?” she asked her grandmother while setting out the plates.

“I’d rather geese,” Nana said. “They’re mean enough to fight off any hecklers, and one goose egg would do well for us both.”

“I don’t know how to raise geese.” Haley frowned at the silverware as she set it out. “And I certainly don’t want to end up with some kind of Livestock Handler class.”

“Would that be all so bad?”

Would it? Maybe it would be a kind of beast tamer? That sounded interesting. But Livestock Tamer didn’t sound anywhere near as exciting. A cow familiar sounded like the start of a bad joke. Haley sighed. “I wish the aliens had been clearer about how to win the apocalypse.”

“Do you think there’s a way to win?”

“If it looks like a game, there’s a way to win.”

“We have cold air in summer, French toast for breakfast, and hot water for showers,” Nana said. “Plus, no monsters scaring us. Feels like we’re already winning to me. Besides, aren’t you making those lovely scrolls?”

“I am, but I don’t think I’m meant to be some kind of scribe.”

“That’s all that’s upsetting you.” Nana set out the maple syrup. “You want to know what to do with yourself. You want a plan.”

“Doesn’t everyone?”

“I think sometimes the path you’ve decided you want blinds you to opportunities that might suit you better.”

Haley eyed her.

“Let God have a little room to work, is all I’m saying, little comet.”

“What about you?” Haley asked.

“I have hot water, cold air, French toast, and no monsters,” Nana said. “I’m good.”
